 The article "Meta Quest 3 review: The VR headset most people should buy in 2024" (Wan, 2024) describes the features and uses of the Meta Quest 3 - a virtual reality (VR) headset with mixed reality (MR) capabilities at an accessible price geared towards the general consumer market. The Meta Quest 3's design features 2 RGB cameras for an enhanced MR experience with high-revolution pass-through, pancake lenses providing higher per-eye resolution with a wider field of view (FOV) and a more powerful chipset in the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip as compared to its predecessor. According to Wan (2024), despite the Meta Quest 3 being heavier versus the Meta Quest 2, its slimmer components like the pancake lenses allow for a better balance on the user's head. Priced at USD 499, the Meta Quest 3 enables users to have high-quality experiences with both VR and MR at an affordable price.

Meta Quest 3 is a popular choice among enthusiasts and general consumers due to an excellent balance between high VR performance and affordability in the VR headset market.

Meta Quest 3 brings high VR performance to the market for several reasons. One reason is that the Snapdragon XR Gen 2 chipset delivers 2.5x higher GPU performance (Qualcomm, n.d.) which allows for faster render times. 8x AI performance improvement enables background AI applications that enhance the user’s experience to run smoother versus the Snapdragon XR Gen 1, which is used in its predecessor Meta Quest 2 (Meta,n.d.-a) and competitors such as Pico 4 (Pico, n.d.). Secondly, is the “4K+ Infinite Display” (Meta, n.d.-b), capable of a 2064 x 2208 display resolution paired with 110°horizontal/96° vertical field of view (FOV) (Meta, n.d.-a) as compared with the 1832 x 1920|90° horizontal and vertical FOV of the Meta Quest 2, resulting in richer immersion for the consumer. 

Affordability is a highlight of the Meta Quest 3 compared to its competitors, offering great value for money for its performance. VR headsets like the PlayStation VR 2 at USD 549.99 (Playstation, n.d.) require a PlayStation for it to function while headsets such as the Meta Quest Pro at USD 999 (Meta, n.d.-a), have comparable performance to the Meta Quest 3 despite costing more with just slightly more features such as eye tracking. Being a standalone VR headset [a VR headset capable of operating untethered to a computer or console], it's competing with other headsets within and above its price category but without the caveat of requiring an external device to run and with competitive VR performance.

According to Meta (n.d.-b), the Meta Quest 3 is capable of 2.2 hours of battery life on average usage. Compared to other standalone VR headsets like the Pico 4 with 2.5 hours of battery life (Engels, 2024), or tethered VR headsets such as the PlayStation VR 2 (PlayStation,n.d.) which is powered by the device it is plugged into, allowing the user to operate it as long as the controllers have battery. This drawback affects the decision-making of consumers when considering which VR headset to purchase. A survey conducted by YouGov (Stibbs, 2024) found that 45% of American consumers would rate long battery life as their top consideration. Therefore, even though the Meta Quest 3 has competitive VR performance and affordability, consumers may choose other options with similar performance and better battery life. 

In conclusion, the Meta Quest 3 delivers a blend of VR performance and affordability that makes it popular among enthusiasts and general consumers looking to have a high-quality VR experience without breaking the bank. However, the short battery life would be a deterrent for those looking to utilize it over a long period in a single session.
